Welling v Grimsby Team News

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/01/2013

GRIMSBY have promised to play the strongest team possible for the tricky FA Trophy match at Welling on Saturday, so that means "new" signing Ross Hannah is almost certain to start the match in deepest Kent.

With several comings and goings at Blundell Park it's difficult to predict the exact team that will take the field at Welling's Park View Road ground. However some pointers are:

  • Nathan Pond has gone back to Fleetwood, so Shaun Pearson is likely to take his place in the back four.
  • Jamie Devitt will definitely be involved, but the Hull City winger may have to settle for a place on the bench again.
  • Ross Hannah should start, probably alongside Andy Cook, or possibly new signing Richard Brodie..
  • Aswad Thomas is still suspended, meaning Bradley Wood will continue to fill in at left back.
  • Anthony Elding is available but won't travel as Town are trying to offload the striker after his loan spell at Preston came to an end.
  • No further signings are expected before the game.

Welling are in tremendous form, top of the form table in the BSS, with a 100% record over the last 6 games. The Wings have already knocked out Newport and Woking in this competition, so will be a tough challenge. Town fans will remember Kiernan Hughes-Mason from last season (late equaliser at Luton), who is now a regular in the BSS for Welling.

If the match is a draw there will be a replay on Tuesday at Blundell Park. If Town progress to the next round (the Quarter Finals) the away match at Cambridge will have to be re-arranged as the FA Trophy games take place on 26th January.

Grimsby have yet to concede a goal in their three matches in this tournament to date, although this is the toughest challenge yet. The final is of course at Wembley Stadium.
