A Massive News Day!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/11/2011

ON a busy day at Blundell Park there have been several developments, which is extremely unusual on a Thursday! The news is at all levels: board room, players in, players out and their next opponents.

  • Firstly Former Grimsby Town chairman John Fenty was re-elected to the board at this morning AGM. Fenty though told the floor that he was reluctant to resume the role of chairman whilst control of the club remains outside the boardroom. The fact that Fenty no longer holds a majority is due largely to Mike Parker and the shares he donated the supporters trust. So Grimsby currently do not have a chairman, although no doubt the story will not end there.

  • Town have to made two loan signings until the end of the calendar year. Veteran Luton defender Will Antwi and teenage Bury midfielder Luke McCarthy have joined the club.

A Luton contact, speaking of 29-year-old Ghana international Antwi, told the Fishy: "he could do OK for you. He’s solid but nothing special. He was brought in when we lost two out of three central defenders to (several months long) injuries. Since then we've had one defender return and signed Janos Kovacs until January with the expectation of signing him permanently. So he’s dropped way down the order. Good for us to lose a wage (every bit helps)."

Young McCarthy is less well known as he has played just one first team for Bury, who he joined after coming through the ranks at Man City.

  • Meanwhile wide man Rob Eagle has followed in the footsteps of Anthony Church and joined Alfreton Town on loan. Eagle has made a few sub appearances at Blundell Park, and with no reserve side this season at Blundell Park, he has been sent to Alfreton to get some playing time under his belt.
  • Town's opponents Kettering on Saturday are under "extreme pressure" according to their manager Mark Stimson to field a side on Saturday, after financial problems have decimated the midlanders' squad. Stimson told the BBC he would have to field "young kids" in order to fulfill the fixture. As a result there has been a large amount of money placed with bookmakers on Grimsby to win the game at the weekend, and two of the countries biggest bookies Stan James and Paddy Power have suspended betting on the Mariners.
