Lady Luck Denies Grimsby

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 30/08/2011

LADY luck once again deserted Town at Gateshead as the Mariners slumped to another narrow defeat on Bank Holiday Monday. Town arguably had the better of both halves but poor finishing and refereeing decisions cost them the game.

Coulson, Charlie I'Anson and Anthony Church came in for Town, who once again started in a 4-3-3 formation. That meant dangerman Serges Makofo began on the bench.

Odubade's pace down the wing caused a lot of early problems by for Town and the home side went close when a Kempson mistake allowed Clark to get a shot in, prompting a good save from McKeown.

Town had a good chance on the break when the ball well played quickly forward to Hearn and his volley was tipped over by Farman.

Town went even close of 32 when Hearn won a corner. From the corner a poor punch by the keeper allowed Hearn to smash it across goal, Pearson got a foot to it, but the ball was cleared off the line.

Two minutes later Farman made another good save at the feet of Hearn, who had created a chance for himself with his pace.

The first half ended 0-0 with the Mariners looking the stronger side.

Gateshead stared the second half strongly and has a very strong penalty shout, then Shaw missed a good chance with a volley.

On 57 a run from top scorer Shaw created space for himself and Obubade picked him out. Shaw slotted the ball past McKeown.

Town should have equalised when great play by Hearn allowed him to beat his defender then pull the ball back Duffy who blasted over the bar.

Town brought on Elder and Makofo and switched to 4-4-2 with Hearn and Elder up front

Grimsby then had a well-worked "goal" disallowed on 80 which Elding converted but which was ruled out for offside

Town substitute Elding then found himself with a one-on-one with the 'keeper and pulled the back to Spencer but it didn't quite fall right for the big Grimsby striker and a defender blocked his shot.

The final straw for Town can when Spencer was denied a penalty shout for what looked like a clear foul on him by Ben Clark.

It wasn't to be but Grimsby can console themselves that with better luck they could and should have got at least a point from thus game.

The Mariners now find themselves second bottom but now have a run of games against "lesser" sides, starting with Forest Green away on Saturday, a match which they drew 3-3 last season having been 3-1 down.
