Newport v Grimsby Team News

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/08/2011

TOWN'S defence, which has conceded seven goals in two games this season (all down to mistakes) is due to be further tested for the trip to Newport, which on paper is the hardest of their opening three games.

Defenders Silk (knee), Garner (knee) are definitely out, while Darran Kempson (toe) and Shaun Pearson (hamstring) have recently been injured and are not fully fit.

Town's options to reshuffle their pack are rather limited because of the injury problems.

The Mariners are yet to get either a point or a goal so far this campaign and are currently bottom of the league, albeit after just two games.

One likely change though is in midfield where new signing Tyrone Thompson is likely to start. The former Mansfield man has joined Town on a non-contract basis. The managers will doubtless try out some other players who have not yet featured much in the opening two games.

Newport have signed former midfielder and former Northampton captain Ryan Gilligan. The 24-year-old has played virtually his entire career with the Cobblers and m chalked up over 200 appearances. The Welsh side have won one and lost one of their opening two games, but have scored six goals in the process, so Town's defence is likely to come under a lot of pressure.
