Town Go Down in Wales

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/04/2011 (Last updated: 04/04/2011)

GRIMSBY returned empty handed from their trip to Wales, going down 2-1 despite leading for a few minutes after Michael Coulson had put Town in front shortly after half time. Town's lead lasted just seven minutes before poor Town defending at a free kick allowed Newport to equalise. Then a mistake by Arthur allowed Newport to win the game.

Welshman Bryan Hughes was the only change for Town's injury-hit side, making just his second start in midfield since arriving at Blundell Park in January.

Neither side created much in a scrappy first half, but the game came to life just after the break. Coulson stole the ball from a Newport defender, bore down on goal and shot past the home 'keeper from a tight angle to give Grimsby the lead.

The celebrations did not last for long however. Town gave away a free kick which Arthur came out for and missed. The ball was headed back across goal and Knight had a simple tap-in to equalise the game.

Then on 72 minutes Newport played a long hopeful ball into the box which Arthur again missed and Todd picked his spot to give Newport the lead,

Connell went close with 10 minutes to go but his shot went over. Other than that Town ended the rest of the game with a whimper and the winless run under the new management duo continued.
