Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Town Anger the Gods

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/02/2009

GRIMSBY Town must have done something to anger the God of Football as he seems to find increasingly torturous ways of making their supporters suffer. Leading 2-0 with half an hour to go but a man down, Grimsby's hopes were dashed with three Morecambe goals, two of them late.

Newey and Hegarty came in on the left side for Widdowson and Elliot. Llewellyn came in for Proudlock up front. Elliot and Proudlock were both "rested" on the bench,

Town shaded the early moments with Jarman going closest when his shot beat Roche but bounced against the post.

After 20 minutes Town won the ball and Kalala played FORBES through, who finished cooly past Roche.

With the match going through a dull spell it suddenly came to life when Llewellyn was sent off out of the blue, for a dangerous challenge.

Town had an effort from a corner cleared off the line in first half injury time.

With Morecambe having most of the possession Town broke and went down the other end and FORBES scored a second.

Morecambe pulled a goal back on 63 through TWISS when he headed a cross from Wainwright in at the far post.

With 10 minutes to go Town failed to clear a ball in the box and O'CARROLL poked a ball past Barnes.

HUNTER volleyed a corner into the Town net to complete the comeback in the 90th minute.

To make matters worse Bournemouth won in injury time against Dagenham. It now looks increasingly likely that the Cherries will overtake Town. Grimsby's best hope of avoiding relegation is to finish above Chester, or Barnet.

In the meantime all sacrifices to the God of Football will be gratefully received. Several small animals should suffice.

A full report will appear later.
