Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Hird Ponders the Future

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/03/2008 (Last updated: 21/02/2008)

DONCASTER defender Sam Hird is considering returning to Blundell Park next season, if he is offered a deal in the summer. The 20-year-old recently turned down a loan extension to return to Doncaster, where his contract ends in the summer, but that does not mean that he could not be back.

Hird told the Grimsby Telegraph: "My initial contract with Rovers is up in the summer but they have told me there is no problem about getting another year after it runs out. The decision for me then is whether to stay on and maybe end up being in and out of the team as a squad player. Or do I go out to somewhere like Grimsby and play regular first-team football?"

Hird was a regular at Blundell Park, where he played 17 games in a three month loan spell this season, which coincided with Grimsby's recent good spell. Town have yet to play since Hird left as Tuesday's big game against Morecambe was postponed.

Hird has every reason to believe that there would be a place for him at Blundell Park if he wishes in the summer, especially with Town not having a natural player in the right wing back position he made his own during his loan spell.

"I haven't thought too much about it yet but I have spoken with Alan Buckley and said I'd keep in touch. He has told me he would be interested. At this moment I didn't want to commit to anything which is why I didn't extend my loan. That's not to say things couldn't change."

"I've been speaking to my agent and senior professionals. I know on what they would advise. Some say to stay and fight, others to move and play more regularly. We'll just have to see how things go in the summer and I'll weigh it up. I know Grimsby are interested so that's nice."
