Butler Explains All

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/02/2008

STRIKER Martin Butler has explained to the Grimsby Telegraph the reason why he turned down a move to League Two club Hereford - just a few miles from Butler's Worcester home - on transfer deadline day.

"If everything could have been sorted out at Hereford, I would have considered the move. It would have made sense for me to be nearer home and not have that drive. But the contract wasn't right for me at this stage in my career and that is why I turned it down."

Nonetheless Butler is determined to return to the Town team, and get back to fitness after injuring his back - he claims through excessive time in the driver's seat.

"I have a septic nerve trapped in my back and that has led to pain in my hamstring.

"I know I can play at this level. I just didn't realise how much the travelling would affect me to be honest.

"It is a 180-mile trip to play games and train and it has taken its toll a lot. In hindsight, maybe I can look back and say I may have done things different when the move came about.

After another spell at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall, the ex-Reading striker is hoping to get back to playing for the Mariners.

"Hopefully, I can be back playing soon. First and foremost I have to get fit," said Butler, who has managed just one goal in 10 appearances for the Mariners.

Grim Rob Says: Although it's tempting for fans to get on Butler's back (no pun intended), the Mariners are committed to paying his wages for the next 18 months, and really need to get some return for their money. Give him a chance when he gets back to the first team!

  • Today's reserve game with Scunthorpe at Blundell Park was postponed during to a waterlogged pitch.
