Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Rochdale 2 Grimsby 2

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/03/2006

GRIMSBY once again spurned the opportunity to go top of the league, but this time by the narrowest of margins. A goal conceded direct from a corner in the final minute of injury time at Rochdale saw the Mariners pegged back to 2-2, having twice led the game.

In an untidy match on a very poor pitch, Grimsby scored a penalty slightly against the run of play when Reddy was brought down on one of his trademark runs. His compatriot Ciaran Toner stepped up to take the spot kick and overcome the curse of the Grimsby penalty takers under Russell Slade.

Mildenhall and some last gasp defending kept Town's lead intact until half time. Town's only shot on target in the first 45 minutes was the penalty!

After the break Rochdale soon drew level with a very scrappy goal. The ball bounced off Mildenhall into the path of former Mariner Simon Ramsden, who bundled home a loose ball in the box for his first ever league goal.

Rochdale looked to have the upper hand but a mazy Reddy run saw the Irishman ghost past three players, and drag the ball back to Bolland, who controlled and looped a shot past the 'keeper. A superb strike.

It looked to be enough for the Mariners to leapfrog over Carlisle to the summit of League Two, until the last gasp goal.

A full report will appear later.
