"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

sunday 21st november

Sky Sports News

From The Times

Sky Sports News is BBC News 24 without, in the main, the explosions, and it is a better place for it, in many respects. The channel is predicated on the notion that, at any point of the day, somewhere in the world a sports story is breaking of sufficient moment to be announced immediately, in tones of gravity, by someone in a suit - a highly unlikely notion, taken at face value, but one that turns out to be strangely true. Or it does if you allow a groin strain picked up in training by an apprentice at Grimsby Town to be a sports story worth putting on a suit for.

Street Carnival

From The Times

As part of a review of a concert by Bill Bruford [ex- Leeds University, Yes, King Crimson and Earthworks]:

"The lilting Up North, a number from the first Earthworks album, which was released in 1987, was transformed by [Tim] Garland's new arrangement to sound like a street carnival in Grimsby..."

All At Sea

From icsouthlondon.co.uk

With a Carling Cup record as woeful as Charlton's, it was easy to understand the muted enthusiasm at the news that a midweek second round tie confronted them at Grimsby Town's draughty Blundell Park.

No disrespect to the worthy Humbersiders, of course, but their town doesn't rate highly among places you'd choose to be on a Tuesday evening, just as autumn begins to season the air and burrow into the bones. It's a bit bracing, to say the least. Blowy, even. Nobody admitted as much but this unappetising tie promised more cup humiliation lying in ambush for the Addicks.

7th Worst

From The Observer Ground Survey

"Grimsby has the worst seating imaginable, with unbelievably bad views from some areas in the away end. Blundell Park has no redeeming features. It looks a complete tip, and they even increased the cost of a pie in the away end."

"It's a bit of a con. Blundell Park isn't in Grimsby at all, it's in Cleethorpes. You entertain notions of an attractive seaside town with a sandy beach and candyfloss but it's a gost town where all the dogs in Lincolnshire congregate to make a mess on the seafront walk."
