Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Brigg 2 Grimsby 3

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 16/07/2004

MARINERS fans got their first chance to see Russell Slade’s new-look side in action tonight in their first open friendly against Brigg Town at the Hawthorns, where Town ran out 3-2 winners.

The game was used to give Russell Slade a chance to see the host of trialists currently at the club in competitive action. Although many fans, including club owner John Fenty and Chairman Peter Furneux were in the dark as to who exactly some of the trialists actually were. However, we have made an educated guess by the names the players were being called, as to their identity!

The Mariners fell behind in the first few minutes when a Brigg corner resulted in the ball being bundled into the Town net at the far post. 20 minutes later though, Town replied through a 25 yard screamer from new signing Terry Fleming, who looked impressive alongside Coldicott in the centre of midfield. The Mariners went close on a few occasions, and number nine for Town, thought to be ex Derby forward Marvin Robinson, hit the bar with a header. But particularly effective was former Tranmere striker Andy Parkinson, who had been troubling the Brigg backline all half. He got his reward when he sneaked in from the right wing to smash home a shot under the Brigg keeper, giving the Mariners a 2-1 leader at the interval.

The second half began with a whole host of changes for Grimsby, with Young, Crowe, Kamanan, Robinson and Parkinson all departing. Town threatened on a number of occasions with Graham Hockless and Darren Watson going close to increasing the lead. Then, 15 minutes from the end, Brigg made a rare attack into the Mariners half and got a free kick which was brilliantly struck into the top corner of Anthony Williams’ net. There were question marks over the position of the wall, but also of the keeper, who looked uneasy at times between the sticks. But the Mariners soon reclaimed the lead when a cross from John McDermott reached Angolian striker Carlos Garrocho who struck home a beautiful left footed volley into the roof of the Brigg Town net, to make it 3-2 to Town. Overall, a solid performance from Grimsby – some of the players, as expected, looked a little short of match fitness but still dominated proceedings, with Brigg rarely threatening the Town goal.

TOWN: (3-4-3) Williams, Ramsden, Whittle (Crane), Young (Dje), Crowe (McDermott), Coldicott (Higgins), Fleming (Konte/Gabin-Moubeke), Bull (Nicholson), Parkinson (Hockless), Robinson (Watson), Kamanan (Garrocho). Captain - Justin Whittle
