Wednesday News Round-Up

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/05/2004

TOWN chairman Peter Furneaux has revealed that the board have in mind who they want as the next Grimsby manager after a season spent with two unsuccessful men at the helm, interspersed by a brief caretaker spell from Graham Rodger.

The usual suspects are in the frame, including Alan Buckley, Paul Wilkinson and Tony Ford. The board hope to make an appointment this week.

Town travel to Glanford Park tomorrow night to take on Scunthorpe United in the Lincolnshire Cup final. Graham Rodger has been placed in charge of the Mariners for the match against their local rivals, who Grimsby will join in Division Three next season.

Grimsby striker Phil Jevons has revealed he would like to stay at the club and help the Mariners get back into Division Two.

Jevons, who won both the Supporters Player of the Year, and the Fishy Player of the Year Awards, told Mariners Net: "Hopefully I can stay at the club. If I'm offered a decent deal then hopefully I can carry on and get this club back to the Second Division.

"Nothing has been said to me personally and there has been no offers from elsewhere yet."

Barnsley have released former Grimsby Town defenders Tony Gallimore and Peter Handyside. With Town having just six professionals still under contract at the club, some new faces and perhaps a few old ones might be on the new manager's shopping list.
