Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Jevons Sees Off Scunthorpe

By: Martin Copass
Date: 29/10/2003

THE second visit of the season by Scunthorpe’s reserves for a cup match proved very different to the league game earlier in the season. The right sort of game to keep the faithful warm on a cold Wednesday afternoon.

A bright start by Town was rewarded in the ninth minute, when a fine 20-yard effort from Graham Hockless gave Town an unexpected early lead. Although Town continued to push forward, they were caught by a counter attack and the visitors had equalised just six minutes after going behind.

Worse was to come for Town however, as just five minutes later poor defending allowed the visitors to take the lead, and Town now found themselves chasing the game after a decent opening first fifteen minutes. Tame efforts from Jevons, Hockless and Hildred hardly troubled keeper Tom Evans, and it was left to striker Phil Jevons to level the scores with a well-taken free kick that curled in to the top corner.

Another effort was well saved by 'keeper Tom Evans just before half-time, but it was a truly classic piece of ‘dodgy keeping’ that gifted Town the lead on the stroke of half time. A short back pass from one of his defenders hardly looked to much trouble to deal for Tom Evans, but his dreadful attempt to clear it only resulted in the third goal for Town, total embarrassment for him and of course providing much amusement for the few faithful Town fans who were watching. A 3-2 score at halftime looked unlikely twenty minutes earlier but it just highlighted what had been an entertaining first half.

The second half started as the first did, with a bright start by Town, the only difference was they continued for the rest of the half as they push forward at every opportunity. Two further goals from Jevons in the 71st minute and in the 76th minute sealed the game for Town and completed his hat-trick, but they were two of the many efforts from Town during the second half. Young and Soames were replaced in the latter stages, but both can probably be expected to be involved in the squad that travels to play Rushden at the weekend.

This was the best performance from the reserves this season, and with no regular first team player in sight, it bodes well for Town if these young players can put in good performances like this on a regular basis. Phil Jevons has certainly done his chances of playing no harm, but he is likely to have to wait for one of the current front paring to get injured before manager Paul Groves gives him the nod to play.

Final Score: Grimsby 5 Scunthorpe 2

Town: Pettinger, Ward, Parker, Bolder, Young, Wheeler, Hockless, Hildred, Jevons. Soames, Carchedi

Subs: Newton, Hyams, Nimmo, Huckett, Hegarty.
