Bradley Allen Fans Piece

By: Richard Lord

A fan's view of former Grimsby Town player Bradley Allen, who looks back at his time at Blundelll Park and how he was perceived by the fans during that time.

Fans Piece
Bradley Allen was one of those Town players who never really got a fair crack of the whip. His injuries unfortunately got in the way of what could have been a promising career.

His initial signing brought about an amalgamated sigh of relief across the Town. With the Mariners scoring just 40 goals in the league the season before, the arrival of a striker and a well-known face raised optimism at Blundell Park.

More than anything it was the stubbornness of Alan Buckley that prevented Bradley Allen from being the club's top scorer in the 99/00 season. Lee Ashcroft netted 13 times that campaign but nine were from the penalty spot whereas Allen got close to double figures, this bearing in mind he probably made more appearances from the bench than from the starting eleven.

Allen's appearance record is extremely poor across his career. Averaging less than 20 games a season it didn't improve greatly at Grimsby either. He was here under three different managers and only under the latter did he finally start showing his true colours.

His partnership with Michael Boulding was spectacular. Although Allen himself recorded just four goals that season, his work ethic was well appreciated by the fans. In a game against Crystal Palace three defenders tried to wrestle him to the ground but Allen never gave up and eventually put the ball in the net.

He should have been rewarded with a new deal to keep him at Grimsby but for whatever reasons he is no longer here. Bradley Allen has been a great loss to Town.
