Conoco Stadium Meeting

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/04/2002

TUESDAY sees the next stage in the planning process for Town's new Conoco Stadium when NELC meet for the start of the Public Enquiry into the proposed development at Great Coates.

Planning permission for the move to a new all-seater stadium opposite Europarc has not yet been approved by the council, although they have indicated their support in principle for the development following the Minister for the Environment giving the plans the green light just before Christmas last year. The meeting will address the part of the council's local plan document which covers Town's new ground and the retail sites which accompany it.

The enquiry will hear objections from local residents, some of whom oppose the move, including members of Great Coates Civic Society. David Jackson, vice-president of the North Lincolnshire branch of the Council for the Protection of Rural England, is also expected to make a statement at the meeting. Part of the enquiry will include visits to the site near the A1136 where the £14m Conoco Stadium is to be situated.

Independent planing inspector Nigel Payne will listen to all the views on the proposals before preparing a report on the objections for the Council, either recommending that the stadium goes ahead or not.

Terry Thurogood, NELC local plan programme officer, told the Grimsby Telegraph: "Nigel Payne will prepare a report on all the objections and he has indicated he hopes to have it with the council in November. The council must then make the report public within one month of receiving it."

Some background on the planning process, including where Tuesday's meeting listening to residents' objections fits into the grand scheme of things, can be found in Mike Worden's Ground to a Halt
