Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

John Oster 'Sacked' by Sunderland!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 31/07/2001

SUNDERLAND manager Peter Reid has sensationally told former Grimsby Town winger John Oster that he can leave the club. Oster, who still has a year to run on his contract, had turned down a new offer from Sunderland after the former Everton winger had been left out of a pre-season tour in Devon.

Reid explained his decision, saying: "We offered John a new deal and he did not want to sign it so I've told him that he can leave if he gets fixed up. There's been no fall out, it's just one of those things in football. I've left him out of our current tour because I know what he can do. This is a chance for me to have a look at other players."

Oster, who played just 21 league games for Grimsby, before he was catapulted into a struggling Everton side in 1997, has never recaptured the dazzling form which briefly captivated Mariners supporters before he departed for £1.5 to Merseyside

The 22-year-old left-sided midfielder eventually left Goodison Park for Sunderland, but has only played on 6 occasions (with 12 subs appearances) for the Rokerites. Grimsby fans will inevitably speculate whether Boston-born Oster could be returning to Blundell Park for a hero's return.
