Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Guy Ipoua Interest?

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/02/2001

Town boss Lennie Lawrence is reportedly interested in Scunthorpe striker Guy Ipoua, who was today placed on the transfer list by under-pressure Iron manager Brian Laws. "I had Ipoua on trial at Luton and released him, so I know a bit about the player," said Lawrence of the Cameroon striker.

Following the departure of Danish on-loan striker David Nielsen, who failed to agree terms with the club, the Mariners have been looking to bring in a replacement forward to increase the available firepower at Blundell Park - an area in which the squad has not been especially strong for well over a year.

Grimsby have been linked with various players including Trevor Benjamin of Leicester City, who was briefly and infamously named as Lawrence's number one target, before the story fizzled into nothing.

The 24-year-old Cameroon striker was today slammed by Iron boss Brian Laws, who placed Ipoua and Scunthorpe midfielder Lee Hodges on the transfer list in an attempt to obtain a fee for the pair, both of whom would be free to leave Glanford Park at the end of the season under the Bosman ruling. "There is never any loyalty in football anymore" bemoaned Laws on the prospect of the imminent departure of the two.

The situation in which Scunthorpe find themselves is almost identical to that of the Mariners last term when they were forced to place Jack Lester on the transfer list in January. Lester was snapped up by Nottingham Forest for £300K shortly before the Blundell Park favourite would have been free to leave on a Bosman at the end of last season.

Whether or not Lawrence, who has been criticised in some quarters for aiming too high to lure new signings to his squad, will pursue his interest in Ipoua remains to be seen, with both Cambridge and Gillingham already believed to be in the frame for the Cameroon-born striker.
