Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Nielsen Set To Leave

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 16/01/2001

Signs coming from Blundell Park today suggest that there is precious little chance of on-loan striker David Nielsen signing for the Mariners permanently. Lennie Lawrence has said that he is "bored" with the situation and, as the clock ticks, Nielsen now seems certain to be returning to Denmark.

The Dane's three-month loan spell with Grimsby expires at the end of next week, and after months of demands, negotiations and rumours it now seems that Lawrence is resigned to losing Nielsen as he told reporters:

"To be honest - I'm getting bored with the whole thing. We have a wage structure at this club and I'm not going to break that for anyone."

The Grimsby boss then went on to say that he felt Nielsen had been given every possible opportunity to reach an agreement with the club:

"Yes, I would like Nielsen to stay but I've done everything I can to get him to stay.

"He has until the 27th of this month to sign. If he doesn't he will be back on his way to FC Copenhagen."

Left to reflect upon the way that he had handled the negotiations Lawrence added:

"I would have been better letting things go and not negotiating until the last week of his loan spell. I tried to give him plenty of notice and now I wish I had not done that."

Strong indications that Nielsen was unlikely to sign for Town first emerged last week when the Grimsby manager made clear his intention to bring an English striker to the club on-loan.

As it seems almost certain that the man dubbed 'The Messiah' by fans will now be performing miracles elsewhere, Town supporters will be looking towards Lawrence to move quickly in securing the services of a goalscorer to bolster the Mariners flagging attack.

Speculation over recent weeks has seen the club linked with highly-rated Everton youngster Phil Jevons along with veteran Tranmere striker Paul Rideout and Barnsley's Bruce Dyer.
