Town 1 Luton 1

News from 31st July 2000

Blundell Park

The friendly game between The Mariners and Luton ended 1-1 tonight at Blundell Park. Peter Handyside scored Town's opener only for Luton to fight back with an equalising goal by the Hatters with nearly 87 minutes on the clock.

In Handyside's first start for Town following over a year spent struggling with ligament problems sustained in last year's pre-season, the Scot pounced on a mistake by the Luton keeper Allen from a Town corner. Handyside followed up Bloomer's header which was dropped by Allen, and was on hand to tap in from close range.

Town striker Lee Ashcroft watched from the stands after all but sorting out his differences with the club over his move to Wigan. The club and Allen are believed to have met half way in the 28 year old striker's demand of a £50K "signing off" payment as part of money promised in his contract by the club to Ashcroft as part of his signing-on fee.

Meanwhile the hunt for Ashcroft replacement continues with news that Kilmarnock player Michael Jeffrey has been given a trial by Grimsby manager Alan Buckley

The much-travelled 28 year old has spent recent seasons playing in Holland with Fortuna Stittard before joining Kilmarnock.

The former Newcastle and Doncaster striker is a typical Buckley player, small and skilful. Alan Buckley recently stated in reference to Jeffrey:

"He's still under contract at Kilmarnock, but he's got a good touch and he was always looking for the ball.
"He was on a Bosman playing in Holland last year when he went to Kilmarnock, and I was aware of him then.
"He's very highly rated, and Kevin Keegan even took him to Newcastle when he was there."
