Tom Newey

Tom Newey was installed as the club's first choice left back by Russell Slade at the start of the 2005-2006 season. He will always be known for a player who got mixed reviews by the Town faithful.

In his first two seasons with the club he battled to fight off competition from veteran Gary Croft for his place at left back, and it was this Newey who wasn't too bad at all. It's when Croft was released to join Lincoln City, and Newey was the only left back in the squad, that the former Leeds United trainee started to falter. His passes seemed to be short, and he struggled to dictate the tempo of the game. Newey was named as club captain for the 2007-2008 season, mainly because veteran skipper Justin Whittle was no longer a regular.

Newey's performances were good enough at the time to catch the eye of Peterborough United, who were preparing an assault to climb the Football League, however no official Posh deal was struck, despite the club confirming interest in signing Newey.

In the 2008-2009 season, the imposter Tom Newey returned, and he became injured midway through the season. Mike Newell moved to bring in Joe Widdowson on loan from West Ham United, and in turn made Newey available for loan on his return from injury. He then declined a move to Lincoln City, after saying he didn't feel fit or ready enough to make an impact. A few weeks later before the away game with Luton Town, Newell told Newey he was free to leave the club anytime he wanted to. Despite rumours saying he had been released, in theory he had joined Rochdale on loan. Newey played twice for Dale, and despite wanting to stay with the club, Dale decided not to pursue any more interest in him. A few days later he was released by Grimsby.
