Grimsby 2 Yeovil 1

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/02/2005

TWO goals from the Mariners allowed Grimsby to come from behind to defeat league leaders Yeovil at Blundell Park. The Somerset club had gone ahead after a mistake by Anthony Williams, but second half goals from Martin Gritton and a brilliant solo Andy Parkinson firecracker gave Town the points.

John McDermott's injury meant Russell Slade was forced to change his side again. Simon Ramsden played at right back in a 4-4-2 formation, with Parkinson being recalled in midfield. Extra midfielder Graham Hockless had to settle for a place on the bench.

With no side having had a clear cut chance Yeovil went ahead when Anthony Williams failed to hold a routine shot from Davies, allowing the ball to slip under his body.

Town had most of the possession in the first half, but had very few chances to show for it. A Simon Ramsden header, which went just wide, and a weak shot from Crowe were their best efforts on goal.

The game seemed to be heading the way of other recent poor performances at Blundell Park, with the crowd's collective best hope being that Pinault would come off the bench to rescue Town.

After the break both sides stepped up a gear and more chances were forthcoming. Town deservedly levelled the game when a Michael Reddy shot was well saved by Weale, but the rebound fell to Martin Gritton who scored from close range.

Gritton and Reddy then collided as the pair both raced into the box to support a great run by Jason Crowe.

Parkinson then should have put Grimsby in front when the Liverpudlian was put through after being set up by Gritton and Reddy. The former Tranmere midfielder slipped the ball past the 'keeper, but it went wide of the post.

The crowd finally got their wishes when Pinault came on in place of Fleming.

The game looked to be heading towards a draw until Parkinson summoned a winner from nowhere, beating 4-5 players and slotting the ball into the bottom corner. It was a worthy successor to Sestanovich's goal, also against Yeovil, at Huish Park.

Michael Reddy had a couple of chances to put Grimsby 3-1 in front, but they were both spurned.

In the last few seconds of injury time Yeovil had a penalty appeal turned down, when Phil Jevons - who had a very quiet game - was brought down in the box by Simon Ramsden. Fortunately the referee favoured the defender in this instance.

Town's overall performance deserved the three points as they had most of the possession, created the best chances, and the goal they conceded was an individual mistake by Williams.
