Groves on Pouts' Comeback Trail

By: Richard Lord
Date: 19/10/2003

GRIMSBY boss Paul Groves has been encouraged by the news that midfielder Alan Pouton has been given the green light to step up training - but insists there will be no comeback date set.

Pouton has been out of action since injuring his knee in the behind-closed-doors friendly against Lincoln City in July after also missing the run-in last season through a similar injury and suspension.

Speaking to the Sports Telegraph, Groves said: "We don't want to start setting dates with Alan.

"Sometimes when you're injured you can have a good week where you think you're well ahead, and then you have a bad week where you get some discomfort and you can't do the things you've done previously.

"That's not necessarily the case with Alan but sometimes, when you're coming back from a long lay-off, it can feel like two steps forward and one step back.

"He's at the stage now where he might get niggles, but he's done a fair bit in training.

"Alan has been the driving force of this team for the last couple of seasons. He drives us on and he makes things happen.

"We have been unfortunate in that we've had to cope without him, but injuries are part and parcel of modern day football."
