Wimbledon 3 Grimsby 3

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/01/2003

GRIMSBY allowed a two goal lead to slip this afternoon, in a second half goal blitz with four goals in just seven minutes. The game produced an exciting finale when either team could have grabbed all three points at a nearly empty Selhurst Park.

Michael Boulding, starting his first game since his return on loan from Aston Villa, gave the Mariners the perfect start with a goal on 36th minutes, which was the highlight of a rather dull first 45 minutes.

At half time, the returning hero Mick Boulding was replaced by youngster Darren Mansaram, and Darren Barnard also came on for Stacy Colidcott.

Campbell put Town 2-0 up early in the second half with a highly deflected goal from a long way out which wrong-footed the Dons 'keeper and ended up in the back of the net in front of a delirious 200-strong away following.

Grimsby's fortune in their second goal was mirrored in Wimbledon's opener soon after when a clearance by Danny Coyne ricocheted back off Agyemang and ended up going goal-bound. Grimsby responded by sitting back and trying to defend their lead - a fatal mistake on a day in which neither defence looked effective.

Jermaine Darlington brought the game all square, only for Campbell to grab his second from a Darren Mansaram cross, and restore the Mariners' advantage.

Grimsby's joy was short lived as within a minute the match was all-square again after Francis put the Dons level. A tense finish left the Mariners relieved to have come home with a point, and rue their own defensive mistakes which saw them squander a great opportunity to come away with three precious away points.
