Palace 2 Grimsby 0

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/11/2002

A second half demolition job by Crystal Palace saw off Grimsby this afternoon at Selhurst Park, with the Eagles running out 2-0 victors.

After weathering a difficult first twenty minutes, Town had appeared to be at least holding their own, with Stuart Campbell going close to scoring, until a deflected goal saw Palace take a half time lead.

Grimsby's best chance of clawing their way back into the game fell early in the second half, when a foul on Alan Pouton right on the edge of the box (which went unpunished by the referee) led to Pouton's free kick being just tipped over the bar by the Palace keeper.

For the remainder of the second half Grimsby were basically not at the races, and at times the match resembled a shooting practice session for Palace's impressive forward line.

On 61 minutes, the inevitable happened, when Dele Adebola doubled Palace's lead, after having missed a glorious opportunity shortly before. In the remainder of the half Palace hit the bar from a Shaun Derry free kick, with Danny Coyne stood motionless on his line. The introduction of Town manager Paul Groves, along with youngsters Wes Parker and David Soames (making his debut), did nothing to stem the tide.

With the annual mauling at Selhurst, otherwise known as "Palace away", now firmly behind them, Town have a week in which the prepare themselves for the visit of Leicester on Saturday.
