Question of the Week

Coyne Called Up For Wales

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 05/02/2002

GRIMSBY Town's goalkeeper Danny Coyne has been called up for next week's friendly against England's World Cup opponents Argentina in Cardiff. Coyne was set to miss out after Mark Hughes' squad for a training camp this weekend clashed with the Mariners' first division match at Watford on Sunday.

But the game against Argentina for next Wednesday has handed Coyne a reprieve reports the Grimsby Telegraph. He will now dash straight to Cardiff after Sunday's televised game to link up with the Wales squad.

"I spoke to Mark Hughes last night and he said he was still waiting for confirmation on the Argentina game. But he said if it was on he wanted me to be there. It was another meet-up I might have missed out on, but this is brilliant. Especially to be in the squad to face a team like Argentina - it's frightening."

Coyne is one of 4 keepers in the squad and he said "They're all doing well and there's some healthy competition for the goalkeeping positions. Mark Hughes obviously hasn't seen me play an international game before. But I haven't seen myself play one for six years!

"You never know what's going to happen. Whether he will try and see what he's got in his squad, or whether he will give another game to Paul Jones. I'll just go down there, enjoy the week and keep my fingers crossed."
