Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Lawrence Eyeing Enhua Return

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 20/06/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE has revealed today that Zhang Enhua was on a 13,000 pound a week deal at Grimsby Town and would like to bring him back this season! The Town boss has been thwarted to date by the Chinese ruling banning players moving to overseas clubs until after the World Cup Qualifiers.

Lawrence told the Grimsby Telegraph today that he was looking to bring Enhua or one of his international colleagues to Grimsby but as China are in next round of qualifiers in August he will have to wait at least another four months.

"....They're not cheap, Chinese players...."

Lawrence also said he was looking to bring in one, or even two, new faces from the Orient but added "Whether that's feasible or not now I don't know. They've completed the first round of World Cup Qualifiers which was against moderate opposition. Now the next begin in August and that's the real test for them."

China will face Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Qatar in the next round so "you're not going to get any Chinese players in the national squad until early October."

And for the first time, it was revealed that Enhua was the highest-paid player in the Mariners 123-year history when he arrived last December with a personal package of £13,000 -a-week but Lawrence would still like to do it once more for next season.

"On the field it was good, but it was expensive. They're not cheap, Chinese players, but I'd like to bring in one or two. But right now, it's not possible to do anything because of the World Cup."
