Macca Speaks Out

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/03/2001

"Goals change games, and this proved it. We were never in trouble of conceding but one bad deflection or bad bit of blocking by me and they've scored. "It hit me. I should not have turned my back. You're there to block it."

"But maybe sometimes you're better off letting it go through to the keeper. The second one is just a bad goal." Said Macca in an interview with the Grimsby Telegraph today accepting responsibility for the first goal scored by Wolves on Saturday. He also highlighted the problem of some of the players involved in transfer talks but said that the uncertainty over contracts should not be having an effect on the pitch.

"It shouldn't make any difference because you get paid for this year, not the next couple of seasons. You're under contract now to do a job," he said. "But obviously your mind's on wanting to get sorted. If it's sorted you know where you're playing from and you can get on with it."

Manager Lennie Lawrence also expressed his concern in the post match press conference.

"The business with the players we have out of contract is beginning to concern me greatly - both on the field and off it. That's all I'm going to say on the matter."

MacDermott also spoke of the lack of spirit in the team when he said "It's very low at the moment but we have to pick ourselves up for Tuesday hopefully. It's time to put things right and at the moment at home we seem to be struggling more than away. We just need a win to get us going again and we need a bit of belief.

"When we go 1-0 down we maybe feel a little bit sorry for ourselves and we need to get the first goal in every game.

"If we get the first goal, you'll see a different team. People say the fans are supposed to get you going, but we have got to give the fans something to cheer about.

"We've got to grind teams down and we need a bit of luck, but when you're down there you don't get it."
