Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Nielsen: Found Out

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/01/2001

The leader of the Danish football players' organisation Mads Øland in an interview with the press on Wednesday night has said that David Nielsen may have broken his contract with Danish club FC Copenhagen due to refusing to play for Copenhagen when he returns from a loan spell with the Mariners.

Mads Øland said "If a player does not follow an instruction to play then the player is in breach of contract. The player has to follow the instruction from his club." Nielsen had earlier told the Danish press "I wouldn't play for the team even if the manager asked me!", speaking of his return to FC Copenhagen following his loan spell.

Nielsen had earlier blamed FC Copenhagen for destroying his chances to become a Grimsby player, a fact widely disputed both in the British and Danish press.

The Sports Director of Nielsen's Danish club FC Copenhagen Niels Christian Holmstrøm was unavailable to comment, saying that he would not talk about his players through the media, and that Holmstrøm and Copenhagen coach Roy Hodgson would speak to Nielsen when he returned from Grimsby.

Nielsen has gained no friends on both sides of the North Sea after "The Messiah", initially an idol with the Grimsby public, appeared to turn his attention to his own pocket towards the end of his loan spell with the Mariners, to the detriment of both the club he was on loan to (Town) and from (FCK).

FC Copenhagen fans were equally unconvinced by the Danish striker's dubious stories about "difficulties" in his negotiations for a permanent contract at Blundell Park, and Nielsen's talks with the Mariners made back page headlines day after day in the Danish papers.

The news from Denmark about Nielsen's alleged contract breach is unlikely to mend rifts between both sets of fans and the 24 year old striker, but in the eyes of many will confirm a few home truths about their fallen idol.

Thanks to Jostein Jensen for translations from Danish.
