Town Creep Towards the Safety Mark

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/03/2023

GRIMSBY drew their 8th league game at Blundell Park in a frustrating encounter with Newport. Both sides are marooned in the bottom third of the table, with little prospect of being involved with the fights at either end of the table, and the result only makes that more likely.

Ex-Town striker Omar Bogle was Newport's main threat and should have scored from an early chance, but Crocombe denied Bogle. With chances at a premium, Town's best moment was when Waterfall had an effort blocked from a Glennon free kick.

Grimsby struggled to create much during the game, and only a brilliant goal by McAtee lit up the night when he gave the Mariners a first-half lead. McAtee's volley, though, deserved to win the match, taking advantage of the keeper being off his line, striking a lay-off from George first time, and it was perfectly executed, dropping into the net under the crossbar.

The Mariners started the second half poorly, as Newport came out strongly, and Town were under pressure right from the off. It was no surprise when Farquharson levelled the game, ghosting in from a poorly defended corner.

Paul Hurst brought on Taylor for Emmanuel and the extra attacker made Town more of a threat but they struggled to create many clear-cut chances, although Taylor should have won it in extra time, but his shot was saved.

A point was probably what both sides deserved, and at least keeps the total ticking over, but failure to win another home league game is a disappointment, with just three wins in the league at home all season, the third worse record in the league.
