Well beaten by Exeter

GRIMSBY were well beaten by Exeter in their joint heaviest home defeat of the campaign. The cracking run of results in the last month had to come to an end sometime but it was a shame that it happened to a team below them in the league - although Exeter now lie a place above Grimsby.

Marcus Bignot made no changes to the side which won at Hartlepool.

Chances were at a premium in the first half but Town failed to clear a corner in their six yard box and Reid drilled home from close range for the opener just before half time. Town's best chance on the opening 45 was Shaun Pearson's header from a corner.

Early in the second a misplaced pass presented the ball to Wheeler to score the second and Watkins ran through the statuesque Town defence for the third with 10 minutes to go to wrap up the points.

Grimsby appear to have cracked the away part of the division but at home, in front of their own supporters, the paying customers, they have lost too many games. Either Town need to have a different line-up or formation at Blundell Park to what seems to work away, or they need to use different players for the two situations. The biggest problem would seem to be the scarcity of chances, which even in the games they have won, has generally been the case all season. Only Omar Bogle's form in front of goal has really disguised the severity of the problem so far this season.
