The Honeymoon is Over

MARCUS Bignot experienced his first defeat as Grimsby boss in another high-scoring match, this time away at Crawley. The Mariners ended up the wrong side of a 3-2 defeat, although they had the chances to rescue a point in the closing stages after Omar Bogle's wonder goal had given them a lifeline.

The new Town boss stuck with the side that finished the game against Carlisle, which mean starts in midfield for Dominic Vose, Craig Disley and Tom Bolarinwa.

Grimsby had the best chances in the opening half hour. Jackson had a shot which the 'keeper saved at full stretch, and Summerfield blasted over after a good build-up. The opening goal summed up the game when Crawley broke up a Town attack, broke down the other end of the field, and James Collins skipped around McKeown and slotted in from an angle.

Town had a shot cleared off the line then the equaliser had a large element of fortune when a deflection took the ball out to Bolarinwa whose cross picked out Bogle to head in the equaliser just before half time.

Town started the second half brightly and an audacious attempt from Bogle from 40 yards out and near the touchline was close enough to hit the top of the net.

It looked like Town would go on from there and, at the start of the second half, Bogle put a 35 yarder onto the roof of the Crawley net. But it was Crawley who edged their way back into the front. This time Collins was provider running into the corner area and pulling the ball back for Roberts to steer flick the ball cleverly into the edge of the goal.

Crawley had chances to go further ahead and James McKeown kept the lead to one goal. Crawley had a man over on another break away attack but made a mess of it, but the two goal lead finally came to pass when Roberts scored direct from a corner.

With the match seemingly dead Bogle suddenly have Town a lifeline with a stunning 30 yard solo goal. The ref awarded five minutes and Town piled forward. Town sub Browne had the chance to make the score 3-3, but for some reason decided to pass into a crowded box when he had a clean view of goal.

Grimsby had their moments and could have scored a couple more but the mistakes and goals conceded continue to mount which makes it difficult to score enough goals to win games at the other end.
