Mackreth: Third

Welling There Town

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/11/2015

GRIMSBY notched up another win, this time against Welling, to consolidate their position in the top 5. The Mariners were briefly behind in the game when Welling took a shock lead, but Town bounced back with two quick goals. Town missed numerous chances to get a third, although Welling rarely threatened.

The Mariners finally sealed the points with a breakaway goal in injury time from substitute Jack Mackreth. It was a thoroughly deserved win, although Grimsby in truth should have scored the third goal which would have all but secured the points, earlier than the did. It meant the last few minutes were a little bit nervy as Town were content to defend a one goal lead and Welling had nothing to lose as they pressed for an unlikely equaliser.

New signing Alex Jones started for Town for the first time and partnered Amond up front with Marshall dropping to the bench. Toto Nsiala was the only other change, coming into the back four in place of central defender Shaun Pearson.

Grimsby started brightly but Welling scored with their first attack, a cross from the left was headed down by Corne and past McKeown. It was another soft goal to concede but Town bounced back almost immediately. Amond mishit a shot and it came out to Arnold who drilled it into the net for a quick equaliser.

Town completed the turnaround almost straight away with a fantastic free kick from Townsend who curled the ball to beat the 'keeper on his near post in front of the Pontoon.

Grimsby at this stage were rampant and another "cricket" score looked on the cards. Welling though survived several goal mouth scrambles to go into half time 2-1 up.

The second half saw Grimsby have less chances and Welling rarely threatened Town's goal. Jones went close for Town with a shot over the bar in the second half, but as the game progressed the Mariners began to get more defensive and became more content to defend their one goal lead.

The Mariners created enough chances to get a third though in the last 15 minutes. Clay had a shot just wide, Mackreth played a ball across the box that somehow eluded all Town's players, and then Mackreth also had an effort saved.

Welling's main threat was just the knowledge that they only needed one goal. A late free kick for the visitors was a rare case of "squeaky bum", but in the end Welling didn't really press for the goal they needed. By the time they did it was too late and Grimsby broke outnumbering Welling by about three players. Eventually after an exchange of passes Amond played it to Mackreth who got to finish it off, although there was a queue of Town players who could have completed the job.

It was a well deserved victory but Town's next game at Eastleigh will be a much sterner test against an in-form promotion rival.
