Five FA Cup Goals

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/11/2015

GRIMSBY breezed into Round 2 of the FA Cup although it wasn't as comfortable a win as the 5-1 scoreline suggests. St Albans had chances throughout the game and Grimsby only wrapped the match up with three late goals. The game was marred by injuries to strikers Omar Bogle and John-Paul Pittman.

Monkhouse and Brown came in for Town, with Craig Disley on the end of a one match suspension. After a quiet first half hour Townsend brought the game to life with a quality free kick into the top corner.

Amond replaced the injured Bogle just before half time and scored almost straight away, latching on to a defensive mistake to tuck the ball past the 'keeper.

St Albans had looked dangerous on occasions and Theophanous smashed in a lifeline midway through the second half with a long-range strike which came off the underside of the bar and into McKeown's net. An upset, or the need for a replay, looked briefly a possibility.

But Grimsby restored their two goal lead when Clay and Arnold combined to create a tap-in chance for Pittman, who scored but was injured in the process.

Marshall came on and became the fourth different striker to score in the game when an individual goal running through the St Albans defence. Then Amond rubbed salt in the wound nodding in a fifth against a tiring rearguard.

The result brings a bit of welcome prize money and Town's name in the hat for Round 2 with the big names just one round away.
