Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

0-5!
0-5!

Humiliated!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/08/2011

GRIMSBY slumped to a new low with a 5-0 mauling at part timers Braintree, eventually succumbing to their highest ever defeat in the Conference. It was a match which the Mariners initially dominated and looked at one stage like winning heavily themselves.

However once the first goal went in Town crumbled, conceding two goals just before half time, and another two just after it. The Essex side grabbed a late fifth to rub salt in the wound, and Town's new bosses now find themselves under pressure after just two games.

Town made three changes from the opening game with Fleetwood. Pearson and Wood coming into the defence and Artus replacing Thanoj in midfield.

Town started strongly and Ridley hit the post early on, with Elding failing to get the rebound past the 'keeper.

The Mariners then had a strong penalty shout for what looked like a clear handball by Paine but the referee appeared to miss it.

When Pearson had a shot cleared off the line it looked only a matter of time before Grimsby took the lead but the home side gradually came into the game.

Just before half time Braintree won a corner. They took a short one which left the defence statuesque, allowing Davis to head home unchallenged. Just a minute later Braintree scored from a similar corner. Davis once again got his head to the ball, but this time Marks was quickest to react to double the home side's lead.

2-0 flattered Braintree, but Town's possession meant their was still hope going into the second half,

That hope soon evaporated when Braintree broke early in the second half. Yiadom then skipped past Ridley, before firing the ball past McKeown.

The fourth was a repeat of the first two when Marks headed into the net from a corner,

Hearn and Duffy missed chances for Town to grab a consolation, but the home side extended their lead in the last minute when Ridley was beaten by Chilaka and Quinton converted the rebound when the Town 'keeper got a hand to Chilaka's shot.

It's too early to say yet whether this is a freak result or Town are going to seriously struggle in this division this season (they are now firmly bottom). However the early signs are that the Mariners look some distance off being promotion contenders, their stated aim, and the best we can hope for is mid-table.
