Pre-Season Results

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 31/07/2011

GRIMSBY have beaten all the teams below them in pre-season friendlies so far, and lost to all the teams in divisions above them. With nine players signed this summer so far, and a possible tenth on the way, it will not be possible to see how good Town are until they meet their equals.

The friendly results so far have been:

  • Rotherham Utd (1-3) - 1 division higher
  • Sheffield FC (2-0) - 3 divisions lower
  • Barnsley (1-5) - 3 divisions higher
  • Winterton Rangers (3-1) - 4 divisions lower
  • Barton Town (6-0) - 4 divisions lower
  • Doncaster Rovers (0-3) - 3 divisions higher
  • Gainsborough Trinity (2-1) - 1 division lower

The closest teams to Town in the football pyramid who Grimsby have played so far are Rotherham and Gainsborough, who are a division higher and lower respectively. The Mariners have still to play Brigg Town and BSP newcomers Lincoln City, the latter in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup.

The conclusion, if there is to be one at all, is that Grimsby's pre-season results suggest that their side is, on paper, of Conference strength. Their first meaningful test in just under two weeks will tell us more about where they stand in relation to the other 23 teams in the division.
