In Search of an Instant Fix

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/04/2011

ROB Scott and Paul Hurst have told several young Town players that they are surplus to requirements, despite the fact that several of them have many years left on their contracts. Neil Woods was building a team for the future - the new pair are trying to construct a winning side from first principles.

Young first team regulars Charles Ademeno (22) and Serge Makofo (24), together with fringe players Josh Fuller (19), Tom Corner (18) and Mark Gray (19), have all been told they are free to go. Ademeno had one year left on his contract, Makofo had two years - money all wasted. Some of these players may go on to have successful football careers elsewhere - they certainly have time on their side.

Other players are likely to follow, with several squad members reaching the end of their contracts in the summer. Some of them probably can't wait to go, others might just be shown the door. The current youth team players who the previous manager Neil Woods knew inside out are all likely to overlooked and maybe released because they are not the finished product - more money wasted.

To be fair to the new managers they know they don't have time for long-term signings. The board and the fans don't have the patience to see them bear fruit unless they are accompanied by short-term results.

The message sent to any potential signing for Grimsby Town FC is that this is not a club to come to, even if you are offered a long deal. A trigger-happy board, fans who get on your back while you are still coming to grips with the side, and an air or despondency and failure surrounding the club is hardly the most attractive of propositions for someone looking to move into the area and sign for the Mariners.

Imagine if we changed government every year - it would be chaos and nothing would ever be achieved. Maybe one day our quest for an Instant Fix will work, but it's hard to see how the constant revolving doors at Blundell Park are benefiting anyone other than our local rivals to whom we have become a perennial laughing stock.
