Hegarty Signs Three Year Deal

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/03/2008

NICK Hegarty has signed a contract to stay with the Mariners until 2011. Town's longest serving player has been on the fringes of the first team for the last four years, and had been overlooked by a succession of managers until recently.

After a successful loan spell at York in the autumn, the left-sided midfielder returned to Blundell Park and impressed Alan Buckley enough to be included in his new look 3-5-2 formation at left wing back. Since then the 21-year-old has made the position his own, and now has a good chance of appearing at Wembley just a few months after he'd be looking to get even a substitute place at grounds like Gigg Lane.

Town have several players out of contract in the summer, and Alan Buckley will be starting to think of which players he will be offering new deals to soon. Last week 17-year-old youth team defender Matthew Bird was given a professional contract. This week Hegarty is the first of the existing squad to be offered terms.
