Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Gritton to Sign!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/12/2004

GRIMSBY have finally agreed terms with Torquay over the transfer of striker Martin Gritton to Blundell Park. The 26-year-old is expected to sign on Friday morning for the Mariners, subject to the usual medical, and therefore would be available in time to play Macclesfield on Sunday.

Russell Slade said earlier today that personal terms had been agreed between the player and Grimsby, and that it was simply down to the two clubs to agree a fee.

Torquay had been holding out for a £50K price tag on the six foot forward. something which Town had been reluctant to match. But the Devon club were keen to get the Glasgow-born striker, who has spent all of his career in the West County with Yeovil and Plymouth as well as Torquay, off their books, and therefore have lowered their price to just £5K.

Gritton, who has netted 6 goals for Torquay this season and was their top scorer in the 2002/03 campaign is expected to complete the necessary paperwork before the 12 o clock deadline tomorrow. This means that he could feature on Boxing Day against Macclesfield at Blundell Park.

If Gritton signs as expected it will be a timely Christmas present for Town boss Russell Slade, who has been trying to sign a big forward virtually since the day he arrived at the club in May.

Torquay chairman Mike Bateson told the Gulls' official site: "The £50,000 asking fee was something of a blind but at least it narrowed the field down to serious contenders. We have agreed a nominal fee so money was not the object of the exercise. We will receive £5,000 plus a further £5,000 if Grimsby Town are promoted to League One in the next two seasons".
