Post Match Reaction And The Red Card!

BOTH managers and a couple of fans gave their views of the game and the sending off that occured in extra time as Town went down to Carlisle in the LDV Trophy.

Russel Slade was not pleased and that was obvious when he told the Grimsby Telegraph;

"There's one or two of them, you know, who have knocked on my door and wondered why they have not been in the first team. Well, they have answered some of their own questions. So anything going round in their little minds, perhaps they have answered for themselves. They've had their opportunity and perhaps they feel they have not taken it."
"The first half performance was poor and I let them know at half-time. I thought we got a bit better at times in the second half and were certainly more competitive. The changes are going to upset your balance. "We need to get that back on Friday, but I am sure when it comes to the league game the boys will knuckle down and get the right result."

"The two goals have disappointed me. It was a bit like going to back pre-season when we conceded goals that were unnecessary from set-plays - we have not done that in recent weeks but it came back. "I thought Forbes was by far the best player, certainly on my side, and probably in the whole match."

"He didn't do much wrong but it was not easy for him." On Cramb he said; "He did quite well in patches and he made no mistake with the opportunity to score a goal, so I thought he did ok."

Town fan Barnards_left_peg posted his comments on the Fishy MB:

"I give a sh**t going all that way to see us outclassed by some cannon fodder, we tactically had no idea from the start and I'm getting a bit peed off with watching them do short passes and hoofing it up rather than direct passing like other clubs."

"I really thought the fringe players who came in tonight for others would have played with some passion and try and aim for a first team place but they would rather dawdle about and not put in 110% than take the opportunity by the scruff of the neck."

Paul Simpson said: "The spirit among the lads was superb again and getting an early goal was a boost for us. We got pegged back just after Craig Farrell had hit the crossbar with a shot but we responded well and it was a quality free-kick from Chris Lumsdon that led to Simon Grand's winner."

"We wanted to finish the game in 90 minutes and I thought we deserved the win. We defended very strongly and Paul Arnison looked very good at left-back in the second half when he took on the role from Tom Cowan."

"Kevin Henderson ran his socks off and I've been delighted with his attitude over the last few weeks. It's not just the goals he has scored, his work-rate and attitude have also been superb."

Carlisle fan Leslie Pallister said; "I was delighted, my husband was angry. I support Carlisle and he supports Grimsby. I agree with what he said that if Grimsby wanted to win, they could have done. It looked that way to me too."

"Colin, (Appleton) who went with us, said that it was one of the worst performances he had seen this season. No one cared."

On the Sending Off

Simpson is also going to to study the match video after missing the challenge that led to midfielder Will McDonagh being shown a red card in stoppage time after appearing to stamp on Grimsby's Terry Fleming.

He told the Cumberland News; "I've got to be honest and admit I didn't see what happened. If it was a stamp, he is going to be out for a few games as that is violent conduct, so I'll be watching a video to get an actual idea of what happened."

"Having said that, one of their players stamped on Brendan McGill in the first half and didn't get sent off, while Kevin Henderson was knocked from pillar to post

Russell Slade was in no doubt that McDonagh stamped on his player. He said: "We've now got a concern about Terry Fleming for our game against Cheltenham on Friday, but hopefully he'll be okay. Their player has clearly stamped on him and has been sent off."
