Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Town In A Thriller Drawing 4-4

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 28/03/2004

IN an amazing game today Town came back from being 1-0 and 3-2 down to draw 4-4 in a game that had a number of incidents with Town finally getting their act together although their second half performance looked like a loser until Barnard and Rankin spoiled the plot!

Glynn Hurst started the scoring in the 19th minute putting Chesterfield in the lead. Ian Anderson then scored a great goal in the 35th minute to draw level. In the 42nd minute Jamie Lawrence took advantage of confusion in the Chesterfield half after the linesman was overruled by the ref, as the players protested, Lawrence put the ball in the net.

David Reeves equalised with a good gaol in 66 minutes. A penalty to Chesterfield in the 73rd minute looked like ending it for Town who were under pressure most of the time.

In the 85th minute Innes was sent off for his second yellow card and immediately after in the 86th minute Barnard scored and one minute later Rankin got another and Town looked like getting their first away win for months!

It was not to be as in the first minute of Injury time Crowe fouled for the second time in the box and Chesterfield made it 4-4 from the penalty spot. Darren Mansaram protested too much and was sent off for remarks he made to the ref.

According to the commentators on Radio Humberside, Town showed a great deal more commitment and drive than they have shown for some time but in the second half a goal from Chesterfield was always going to happen as they placed Town under great pressure before the double goals from Barnard and Rankin.

It was a shame that Town lost 3 points through stupidity and there must be a question about discipline in the side with the number of bookings players are getting.

But despite all that a point away from home is a much needed point that leaves us teetering on the edge of the relegation zone.

A report from someone at the game will be on shortly for an eye witness account.
