We Are Good Enough!

By: Ross Pickersgill

I read Ray Lucas' article in which he expressed doubts about the Mariners' ability to mount a promotion challenge next season. I appreciate his observations, but I feel he may be prematurely downcast.

I doubt anyone would disagree that our squad is already stronger than at the start of last season, so the club is going in the right direction. Losing Coyne and Santos is a pity, but they were part of a poor defence last season - and Santos has a short footballing "shelf-life".

I don't know what Groves has in mind, but a midfield of Anderson - Hamilton - Pouton - Campbell will be as good as any in Division Town, and there's lots of competition for places and other options to consider.

Up front we need Boulding to score plenty, and no doubt Groves wants a big striker to lead the line. In this respect Town are in the same position as 90% of the teams in the Football League. On the bright side, we can expect a decent number of goals from our midfield.

Defensively we probably have too much youth, but one shrewd signing of an experienced player (Handyside?) could make a big difference. If not, we shall have to be patient.

The problem may be time - new faces need time to get to know one another. In addition, Groves has (sensibly, I think) gone for players who can cover more than one position. This means he has more permutations to consider, so determining his best side may take a while.

But pre-season has been promising: good sides win a lot of matches 1-0! All in all, I rate us a definite 'maybe' for a top six place - which is something we haven't been for the last five seasons, to be sure.
