Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

The Norwegian Connection

By: Jostein Jenson
Date: 06/07/2003

GRIMSBY Town FC and Norwegian club Faaberg Fotball Lillehammer (FFL) may be starting a joint exchange deal through the Study Support Centre.

The first meeting about a possible connection has been held at Blundell Park and it is hoped that a deal will materialise from the discussions.

Leicester-raised Stephen Dobson who is a lecturer at the local University College, Høyskolen i Lillehammer (HIL), is the link between Norway and England and is a board member of FFL

"It's true that FFL (Faaberg Football Lillehammer) hope to develop a co-operation with Grimsby Town.

"The arrangement is part of a project called Education Support, which is a scheme for youths in the local community in the Grimsby area. I think that the co-operation could lead to the following:"

·

  • Invitation for Education Support children to travel to Lillehammer. ·
  • Invitation to Grimsby Town Youth and A-team/Reserves to go Lillehammer to train for a week in the summer 2004. ·
  • A possible return trip by FFL Youth and A-team to Grimsby for a week's training (probably around Easter 2004)

Club supremo, Stig Bjørnes, hopes that co-operation will strengthen both parties.

"We as a club look for attractive solutions in relation to player exchanges and player assemblies. We put our effort into young and talented youngsters who will benefit from being a part of such things. I hope that this project will materialise." said Bjørnes who is a former player in the club and now has responsibility for Information and Education. "It would also be good if the Norwegian Grimsby supporters saw the benefits of this."

FF Lillehammer who play in the third division in Norway, are amongst the most ambitious clubs at the level. Being the best club in the area, they have great support by fans and get economical support through their commercial activities.

"We have had early meetings with Grimsby. It's a relatively big club that we hope to learn from. What we are working on now is to exchange training possibilities. As we all know there it is season time here, therefore it would be perfect to get this arranged. It's still at the early stages, but looks good so far. The value of this is big in relation to exchange of players, training camps, matches etc. We will be concentrating on that."END

The project at the moment is only in the proposal stages and no firm commitments have been made.
