Slipped Through the Net: Aidan Davison

IN an exclusive interview as part of The Fishy's new "Slipped Through the Net" series, Richard Lord caught up with Aidan Davison to talk about his time at Blundell Park.
What made Davison's arrival ironic was the fact that he had contributed to the Mariners' downfall in the previous 1996/97 season. With ten games to go he signed for Bradford City on loan after the Bantams were faced with a keeper crisis. Bradford climbed off the bottom of the table to secure safety on the last day and Grimsby were relegated as a result. Davison immediately took the place of Jason Pearcey between the sticks but was soon out of the team when his understudy put in two fine performances against York City and Fulham. However, Davison regained his place and never looked back.
In his first season at Town he played at Anfield and Elland Road, he also faced Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich City and League Cup holders Leicester City. Then there were the two games at Wembley Stadium. Davison formed part of a club record-breaking defence that season, keeping more than 30 clean sheets. John McDermott, Tony Gallimore, Peter Handyside, Mark Lever and Aidan Davison all contributed to what is considered to be one of Town's finest ever seasons.
There was also an international call-up for Davison when he played in Northern Ireland's 3-0 defeat against Germany. His second season with the Mariners was also successful but it all turned sour near the end. One of his last appearances for the club was in a 1-0 win at Port Vale that signalled the end of Town's own poor form. Thereon in saw Andy Love step into the side and fans also witnessed the emergence of rookie Steve Croudson. During that summer Alan Buckley signed Town's current number one Danny Coyne.
Davison has since signed and played for Sheffield United and Bradford City. He is currently at Bradford City and is their number one keeper.
