Clive Mendonca Fans Piece

By: Richard Lord

A fan's view of former Grimsby Town player Clive Mendonca, who looks back at his time at Blundelll Park and how he was perceived by the fans during that time.

Fans Piece
Clive Mendonca. The name still brings back eternal memories six years after his departure.

Hardly an ideal candidate for a modern day legend, standing well under six feet tall and an unspectacular history of Rotherham and Sheffield United reserves.

Having lost out to Rotherham for his signature previously, Alan Buckley loaned Super Clive in 1991 as Town battled relegation.

Mendonca's contribution was massive and I can still see his goal against Sunderland, his boyhood heroes, to cap a fine win. Although my version gets better with each memory, it is still an impressive sight on video.

To describe Mendonca's strengths is somewhat difficult. Possessing neither brute strength or lightning pace, Clive relied more on his brain and deft touch. Many of his goals came from either deep runs beating the offside trap or twisting and turning in the box before firing home.

Always a 110% player, Mendonca's love relationship with the crows was two-way. We all shared his frustration at his injuries. His injuries, in my opinion, held him back from playing at a higher level for most his career.

It was a return from injury that provided my finest Mendonca memory. Having spent the best part of a year on the sidelines, Mendonca returned to action with a stunning hat-trick against high-flying Ipswich Town.

Sadly Mendonca would leave for Charlton just one year later upon Town's relegation. Although the transfer fee allowed the squad to receive a much-needed facelift, one can only wonder 'what if' Mendonca never left.
