Grimsby Town 1 Stockport 0

THERE I was, sat at Blundell Park on a bright sunny Friday night filled with the excitement of the season upon us in a week. After the upheavals of the summer with boardroom wrangles and the sudden transfer listing of key players, this game couldn't come soon enough for me.

When the teams came out there was one disappointing thing: the sight of Dave Challinor lining up in the blue of Stockport County. It brought back the memory of the tackle that almost finished Martin Pringle's career and all the hot air that surrounded that dreadful incident by Carlton Palmer back in February.

On Friday afternoon we'd signed Steve Chettle from Barnsley, and he looked the part alongside his gaffer Paul Groves, with the young McCann filling the left back spot from the start.

The best player in the first half was Terry Cooke with his tireless running down the wing supplying crosses all night for the forwards, and Steve Chettle marshalling the back four as he did at Forest when he was captain.

When Darren Barnard came out for the second half we thought what a signing he can play anywhere - down the left hand side plus, being a Welsh international, well worth signing. The team beat Stockport but there were still a few tough tackles being made. With the squad almost there for the season I don't think its going to be doom and gloom as people think

Throughout the forthcoming season I'm going to be picking a short list for the player of the month and at the end of every month you can vote for them on the Fishy, so if you want to make any suggestions who we should be picking please e-mail me on tonyhamilton238@hotmail.com and then I'll mention what sort of a month they've had.
