Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Dr Fishy's Player Of The Year - Week 9

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 18/07/2002

SO we now move into the top six Town players of last season. Burnett, Willems, Jeffrey, Jevons, Coldicott, Butterfield, Campbell, Gallimore, Groves, Chapman, McDermott, Ford, Rowan and Pouton have all been analysed. Who will it be this week?

Well, in sixth place is a defender who spent the best part of the season at Blundell Park on loan from Blackburn Rovers. He is, of course, Marlon Broomes. He has achieved an average grade of B- after the last eight players had received C+.

Broomes was graded 13 times and he acquired 111 points in that time, giving him an average rating of 8.5 out of ten. His best mark was the A he got at Liverpool, but his worst mark was just a C.

He achieved the B- mark 46% of the time, a high percentage showing his consistency in the team. He may have gone on to play for Wednesday and might now be training with Blackpool, but there’s no doubting he’s a First Division player.

His best run came over all the 13 games he was graded; in that time he never received a D. His worst run came over just two games on two separate occasions, showing that it never took him too much time before he got a B grade.

In total he got one A, six Bs and 6 Cs. The team’s defensive record when Broomes was in the team was never really that impressive, but he had an air of class about him that rubbed off on the rest of the team.

And so we move onto the fifth-placed player, who is striker Bradley Allen. After finishing so high in this table, you have to wonder why he is still out of contract. He may not have got many goals, but he proved to be the perfect striking partner for Michael Boulding.

Allen, like Broomes, managed an average grade of B- after being marked 20 times and totalling 170 points in that time. This gave him a score of 8.5 out of ten, just like Broomes but Allen finishes higher because he featured in more games.

Allen’s best mark was A- and that could have come in quite a few games where he shone. The 6-2 demolition of Wimbledon springs to mind, as does the 5-2 win over Crystal Palace.

His worst mark was D+ as he also featured in the team when they were not doing so well. Overall, he gained the B- grade 30% of the time and so deserves the relatively high average grade.

His best run came over 14 games, and they were his last 14 appearances of the season, showing that when he got his game together, he kept his form. His worst run was over just two games, so a B grade was never far away.

In total he received one A, eleven Bs, six Cs and two Ds. Not a bad record for a player who never knew if he would be granted a first team place for most of the season. Towards the end though, he proved why Alan Buckley brought him to the club.

Now it’s 16 down and four to go. Next week we have another striker and another defender. See if you can guess who they are. After next week’s pairing, it’s down to the top two.

The top three had to be separated by the amount of games they played in, because both their average grades and marks out of ten ended up being exactly the same. You will find out in two week’s time who Dr Fishy’s Player of the Year will be.
