Dr Fishy's Player Of The Year - Week 5

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 01/06/2002

ANOTHER week has passed and so two more Grimsby Town players come up for evaluation by myself, Dr Fishy.

This week features 14th and 13th place, taken up by players who played a fair sized portion of the season.

In 14th place we have midfielder Stuart Campbell. He started the season very well but then got injured and was never really the same afterwards. Some fans suggested that he had been playing the season with an injury and never really recovered properly.

Campbell receives an overall grade of C+ after gaining 221 points from 29 games. That breaks down to an average rating of 7.6 out of ten so the Scotsman can be satisfied with his performance last season.

He got a C+ just 17% of the time, showing that he often dipped and rose over that grade many times. His best grade was A- at Liverpool and the Stockport away game. He also managed to break his home-scoring duck with the winner against the Blades.

His lowest mark was a D, and like many, that probably came at Watford. Campbell's best form of the season stretched over 17 games (without getting a D) and that was in the early part of the season until he got injured. His worst run came over 10 games (without getting a B).

Overall the former Leicester and Scotland Under 21 international got one A, seven Bs, 20 Cs and one D.

And in 13th place we have the vice-captain Tony Gallimore. Towards the end of the season he was in and out of the team because of injuries and suspensions, giving chances to Ben Chapman and David Smith.

Gally gets an overall grade of C+ and exactly the same 7.6 out of ten as Campbell got, but the left-back is higher in the table because he played more games. Gally's form was rather erratic towards the end of the season, but I think it's a fair reflection.

He got a C+ 19% of the time, again showing that he must have dipped and rose over that grade. His best grade was B+ and he got that a few times - especially at the beginning of the season - and at Liverpool, of course.

His worst grade was D- and I think that came in the 2-0 defeat at Crewe. It could have also come in the 4-0 drubbing at Walsall but I can't be sure because it seems so long ago now.

His best run came over the course of 9 games, and that was at the start of the season. His worst was also just 9, so this displays that Gally varies in form, fluctuating between good and bad. If he has one bad game, it won't be too long before he has a good one if that's the case.

Unfortunately Gally got no As but did get an amazing 13 Bs, 20 Cs and three Ds. Most fans agree that he had a much-improved season and was many people's choice for Player of the Year.

Next week we will complete the bottom half of the table. Both are defenders, one was graded 39 times and the other 15 times. Can you work out who they are? All will be revealed next week when I reveal more.
