New Move In TV Crisis

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 19/04/2002

GRANADA's chairman Charles Allen and Carlton's Chief Executive Gerry Murphy have met with League chairman Keith Harris and Chief Executive David Burns in an attempt to break the deadlock in the ITV Digital negotiations.

On Thursday Keith Harris challenged the Carlton and Granada executives to meet with the League teeling them to come to the table.

Reports indicate that pressure is on Granada and Carlton from within their ranks and The Financial Times quoted a shareholder with significant holdings in both companies on Friday as saying: "We want a line drawn under this. If it means paying the Football League what it is owed, so be it."

This weekend could be crucial, as the £20million set aside for the period of administration is due to run out on Monday.

Another major advertiser, a multi national company is also reported to be on the verge of ending its association with Granada.

Under the contract the League are due £89.25million on August 1 and the same amount the following year.

The League have complained to the Stock Exchange, the Independent Television Commission and the UK Financial Services Authority about statements made by Carlton and Granada regarding ITV Digital between November and March.

The League are still committed to suing Carlton and Granada for £500million damages.
