Where will Grimsby finish?

Youth Team Posh Triumph

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 21/11/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN's Youth team fought their way into the 4th round of the AXA FA Youth Cup after a thrilling 3-2 win over Peterborough. Around 250 to 300 people attended the game, the majority supporting the Posh!

Town lined up as follows with reserve team regular Darren Mansaran leading the attack.

Cranley
NewtonWall (C)WheelerKirwin
MorfittThorneThompsonMorfitt
MansaranSoames

From the start Town looked the better team with David Soames pace a constant threat. Town’s first came after a Jonathon Kirwin free-kick was blasted at the wall but Soames reacted first and put the ball past Luke Steele in the Posh goal.

Despite it been a good game I can't really remember that much happening in the 1st half.

2nd Half

Town again started to dominate and were destroying their opponents down the right with Newton and Morfitt combing well on several occasions. However against the run of play Peterborough equalised when Cobb was played through and lobbed the advancing Morgan Cranley. Town continued to take the game to Posh and should have taken the lead again but a David Soames solo effort was ruled out for a foul, which was in fact a legal tackle. Town did eventually take the lead when Wheeler (I think) played a long ball for Soames to run onto and cleverly flick past the stationary keeper.

By now Peterborough were starting to get into the game and equalised through a super effort from Cobb. Having picked up a lose ball, he turned and released a shot from 25 yards which left Cranley no chance. Town had brought on Freddie Cass for James Appleyard just before the equaliser. Cass was having an immediate effect with his clever touches and his fresh legs were causing problems. It was Cass who supplied the winner, floating in a right sided corner which was meet by Darren Mansaran who headed the ball home.

A few incidents happened before the end but nothing to write about.

Overall a very entertaining game with Town looking very good. Notable mentions go to Kirk Wheeler at the back who looked extremely solid and brought the ball out in a ‘Futcher style’, Freddie Cass who’s deft touches were a joy and David Soames who’s pace was devastating and took his goals very well.
