Town Go Down At Wimbledon

GRIMSBY TOWN's dismal form continues as Wimbledon helped contribute to their downfall by beating the Mariners 2-1 this afternoon at Selhurst Park. Lennie Lawrence made changes from the side that lost midweek at home to Norwich but with the same end product: another defeat, their 10th of the season

Stacy Coldicott shifted to right back after Ben Chapman had taken a knock to the shoulder in the match against the Canaries. Butterfield was moved back into the centre of midfield and Pouton went out wide with Willems making a return to the side. Also to make a comeback this afternoon was Stuart Campbell, and Rowan partnered Allen up front after Jevons suffered a last-minute injury.

For the first 20 minutes the home side struggled to make an impression in front of just over 6,000 fans with 300 of them Mariners fans. There was little goalmouth action to get the crowd excited in what can only be described as a dire opening.

It was the Dons who broke the deadlock seven minutes before half time when Roberts struck. This forced the away side to come out of their shells but they failed to find the equaliser before half time.

However Grimsby did get a goal four minutes into the second half when Stuart Campbell scored on his return from an ankle injury. At that time it looked as if the Mariners would take control of the match and go on to win, but they couldn't keep up their momentum and lost their way, allowing Wimbledon a way back into the match.

As the game neared its conclusion, Wimbledon pushed forward and got the winner. After a corner wasn't properly cleared, Joel McAnuff took the Grimsby midfield on before unleashing a shot that was cruelly deflected past Coyne in goal to hand the Dons all three points and left Grimsby with just one win in 11 league games.

Fortunately the teams below Grimsby in the league all failed to win, and only Walsall managed to grab a point. Otherwise it means at the bottom it gets tighter and Grimsby face a real six-pointer next week when they travel to troubled and manager-less Sheffield Wednesday.
